Green coffee bean extract seems to be the newest miracle weight-loss supplement. What is it, how is it different from regular coffee, and how can it help you lose weight?

What is green coffee bean?

Green coffee beans are simply regular coffee beans that are unroasted. Normally, coffee beans are roasted to produce the smoky, aromatic flavor that we all know and love. But for green coffee extract, the beans are left in their raw, natural state.

To get green coffee bean extract, the raw coffee beans are boiled in water, and then the liquid is strained. Energy drinks — such as Starbucks Refreshers — use green coffee bean extract instead of brewed coffee as a source of caffeine that provides a more mild, fruity flavor. Green coffee extract contains about a third of the caffeine as regular coffee.

How does green coffee help you lose weight?

The benefits of green coffee bean stem from a compound known as chlorogenic acid, which has been shown to promote weight loss. These compounds are destroyed during the roasting process and so do not occur in regular coffee. A study published in 2006 showed that mice who were given green coffee bean extract had less visceral fat, which is the dangerous type of fat that accumulates around the abdomen. A 2011 review of 5 different studies involving green coffee bean as a weight-loss aid found that people who took the green coffee bean experienced significant weight loss compared to participants who took a placebo.

Green coffee bean is thought to work by suppressing the release of glucose within the body. Less glucose in the blood means the body has to use stored fat as a source of energy, promoting weight loss. This also reduces insulin levels, which improves metabolic function. Other studies have shown that green coffee bean extract can help lower blood pressure, which may help improve cardiovascular health.

Should you take green coffee bean extract?

Although more research is needed, early studies show a promising relationship between green coffee bean extract and weight loss. Green coffee bean supplements are commonly recommended 30 minutes before each meal to support healthy blood glucose levels and aid in weight reduction.

Regular exercise and a proper diet are essential for reaching and maintaining your goal weight, but supplements such as green coffee bean may increase your weight-loss potential, as well as provide additional benefits in the form of disease-fighting antioxidants.
